France imposes entry restrictions on Algerian dignitaries amid rising tensions between the two countries

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Tuesday that France has imposed restrictions on the movement and entry of some Algerian personalities to its territory, in a move that reflects the escalation of diplomatic tension between the two countries.

In his remarks to BFM TV, Barrot did not disclose the timing of the restrictions or the number of personalities targeted, but he emphasized that Paris is ready to take further measures if Franco-Algerian cooperation in this field is not resumed.

Earlier, on January 13, French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin had called for the cancellation of the 2013 agreement, which allows Algerian elites to travel to France without a visa, explaining that this decision would not affect the 10 percent of French people who have historical and cultural ties to Algeria.

The new decision is expected to exacerbate tensions between Paris and Algeria, which are already experiencing growing differences, especially over France’s stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue and the detention of Algerian-French writer Boualem Sansal in Algeria since last November.

The arrest of Algerian influencers in France on charges of inciting violence through TikTok also contributed to deepening the rift between the two countries, which puts French-Algerian relations in front of new challenges in the coming phase.
