Sahara: Cape Verde Reiterates Its Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

On Tuesday in Rabat, José Filomeno de Carvalho Dias Monteiro, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Regional Integration of the Republic of Cape Verde, reiterated his country’s steadfast position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.

Speaking at a press conference following his meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Dias Monteiro also reaffirmed his country’s full support for the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom in 2007, considering it the only credible and realistic solution to resolve this regional dispute, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dias Monteiro further praised the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a realistic, practical, and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

“Cape Verde’s position, as reaffirmed by Dias Monteiro, aligns with the international momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in favor of the autonomy plan and the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara,” the statement added.

For his part, Bourita thanked Dias Monteiro for the consistent and firm support of his brotherly country for the Moroccan identity of the Sahara and welcomed the opening of a Consulate General of the Republic of Cape Verde in Dakhla in August 2022.
