Social Media Algorithms and Their Impact on Digital Human Rights

By Ahmed Namita Al-Baqali, Researcher in Digital Human Rights Protection

In our current era, social media algorithms have become an integral part of our digital lives. They control the quality of information we see and directly influence our opinions and beliefs. These algorithms began to take on a different character with the launch of Facebook’s personalized news feeds in 2009, and over time, they have become a real challenge to digital human rights.

One of the most significant issues raised by algorithms is freedom of expression. While some countries are taking steps to regulate these algorithms to limit the spread of harmful content and misinformation, this raises concerns about the balance between preserving digital human rights and social control. For example, laws in the European Union, the United States, and Brazil seek to impose new controls on content, but do these measures protect users or restrict freedom of expression?

From another perspective, algorithms play a role in shaping public discourse by promoting content that evokes emotional engagement, leading to the rise of extreme views and overshadowing moderate voices. This may conflict with the right to access balanced and objective information. The idea of the “marketplace of ideas,” which is supposed to allow all opinions to compete freely, has become more complicated under the influence of algorithms that control who is heard and who is not.

As these algorithms grow more powerful, it becomes essential to explore ways to ensure that freedom of expression is not violated and that users have the ability to control the content they are exposed to. Governments and tech companies must collaborate to establish a framework that protects digital human rights and provides a safe and balanced digital environment for all.

The challenge today lies in finding this delicate balance, where freedom of expression is respected while users are protected from the negative effects of algorithms. As researchers in the field of digital human rights protection, we bear the responsibility of advocating for more transparent and inclusive policies to ensure that the internet plays a positive role in our lives, free from excessive control and surveillance.
