A woman from Fez revealed to Fes News, in a private statement, a shocking scandal involving the exploitation of Ramadan charity meals for political agendas. She reported that one association required beneficiaries to provide copies of their national ID cards, emphasizing that this information would be recorded in databases affiliated with a prominent political party in the Moroccan government.
The woman added that this behavior has become public knowledge, where Ramadan charity meals have transformed into a means to mobilize political support and pave the way for an early election campaign. Instead of being purely charitable acts targeting needy groups away from political calculations, they have become tools for political gain.
She continued: “In exchange for these meals, we are asked to support the party’s political activities as if we don’t deserve this assistance unless we serve their interests. We don’t feel it’s about charity or solidarity; rather, it’s blatant exploitation of our poverty and personal data to build electoral capital at the expense of poor people’s suffering.”
This incident raises significant questions about the integrity of associative work amidst politics intertwining with charity. It poses pressing questions about the role of authorities in monitoring these transgressions and ensuring that charitable work does not turn into a gateway for political recruitment and exploiting vulnerable individuals’ suffering.
