Residents of Azrou Demand Reconsideration of Decision to Deny the Establishment of the National School of Food Agriculture and Biotechnology

Azrou, Ifrane Province — February 17, 2025 — The Association of Parents and Guardians of Students at Tariq Ibn Ziad High School in Azrou has sent a letter to the President of the Fez-Meknes Region, calling for a reconsideration of the decision that led to the denial of the establishment of the National School of Food Agriculture and Biotechnology in Azrou. The project was officially announced by Moulay Ismail University during the presidency of Dr. Hassan Sahbi and was confirmed by former Minister Mr. Said Amrazi, with support from the allocation of 8 hectares of state-owned land by the former governor of Ifrane Province, Mr. Abdelhamid Mazid.

In its letter, the association expressed the dissatisfaction of the residents of Azrou with the diversion of this project to a larger city that already hosts no fewer than eight higher education institutions. The association considers this decision to reinforce feelings of injustice and inequality between the center and the periphery, as well as among the citizens of the same region, in stark contrast to the principle of territorial equity, which is a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s constitution.

The association noted that the residents of Azrou had initially welcomed the announcement of this project, which was expected to integrate the city and the Middle Atlas region into the dynamics of sustainable development, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI within the framework of advanced regionalization and the new development model. The project was also seen as a means to alleviate unemployment and reduce the vulnerability faced by the region’s youth.

The association urged the regional president to give this matter the attention it deserves, expressing hope that the injustice resulting from the denial of this vital project to the city would be rectified. The letter concluded with sincere respect and appreciation for the regional president, expressing confidence that the relevant authorities would take the necessary steps to address this issue.

It is worth noting that Azrou is renowned for its strategic location and contributions to the nation’s highest interests, making it well-suited to host major development projects that promote territorial equity and sustainable development.
