On Monday, January 20, 2025, the Governor of Taounate Province chaired an extensive meeting of the Provincial Vigilance Committee, during which the regional plan to address the impacts of the severe cold wave on the affected population was presented. The meeting focused on outlining the precautionary measures and effective actions taken by various relevant authorities to mitigate the effects of this cold wave, which is severely affecting several mountainous regions in Morocco.
This meeting is part of the implementation of the royal directives aimed at mobilizing nationwide efforts to provide essential support to citizens, particularly in areas most affected by the cold weather, ensuring their safety and health under these extreme conditions.
The regional plan targets several remote villages in the Tamda commune of the Taounate District, as well as the Wadkha and Rutba communes in the Gafsai District. These areas are characterized by high altitudes ranging from 900 to 1700 meters above sea level, with a population of approximately 10,800 people, distributed across 2,500 households. The areas are among the main targets of the intervention plan, with a focus on clearing snow, alleviating isolation, and repairing damaged roads.
The actions taken are not limited to logistical measures alone but also address health and social aspects. Multidisciplinary medical teams have been assigned to visit the affected areas, with medical convoys organized under the “Care” initiative to offer consultations and treatment, particularly in light of the challenging health conditions during the cold wave. Special attention will be given to vulnerable individuals, such as pregnant women, to ensure safe deliveries under healthy conditions.
In terms of social support, winter clothing and warm blankets will be distributed to elderly men and women from impoverished families, in addition to providing wheelchairs to people with disabilities. Heating devices will also be provided to improve the learning conditions in schools and ensure warm environments in administrative offices within government facilities.
Additionally, support will be directed to the homeless by establishing reception and shelter centers to provide a safe environment for them during the cold nights. Iron stoves will also be distributed to several families living near forested areas, helping alleviate their suffering during extreme cold spells.
