Clarifications Regarding Rumors Related to the Journalism Profession in Morocco

Reliable sources have denied to “Telquel Arabi” the claims circulating about the issuance of a memorandum by Moulay Hassan Daki, the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation and Head of the Public Prosecution, requesting thorough investigations into individuals claiming to belong to the journalism profession or lacking the legal requirements to practice it.

Rumors also suggested that Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi requested in a letter dated January 2nd that the Attorney General enforce the law against anyone impersonating a journalist without holding a legal press card.

Upon reviewing the statements related to these rumors, it was found that they referred to a previous statement made by Abdallah Boucali, President of the National Union of Moroccan Journalists, in 2022.

The sources also confirmed that the Justice Minister sent copies of his correspondence to the General Directorate of National Security, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Ministry of Interior, and all relevant ministries, reflecting the Moroccan authorities’ efforts to ensure that journalism is practiced in accordance with existing laws.
