The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, announced the launch of new criteria to support regional journalism in Morocco during a meeting of the Education Committee in the House of Representatives. The minister confirmed that access to public support is now conditional on employing at least four professional journalists, emphasizing the need to distinguish between professional journalists and amateurs to ensure the improvement of media content quality. Bensaid explained that support for websites relying on a small number of individuals or those that include only relatives will not be possible.
The minister also pointed out that regional journalism outlets with an annual turnover of less than two million dirhams will benefit from special support, provided they adhere to the new criteria. He called for encouraging regional newspapers to consolidate into competitive media enterprises.
In his remarks, the minister noted that there are approximately 900 online sites in Morocco, necessitating strict criteria to ensure that support is allocated to media outlets committed to quality and professionalism. He confirmed that public support will be contingent upon maintaining job positions and enhancing the stability of workers in the sector.
These steps are part of the government’s strategy aimed at developing the media sector and ensuring the provision of content that aligns with citizens’ needs and aspirations.
