Traffic Accident in Fes Highlights Road Safety Challenges Amid Morocco’s Preparations for International Sports Events

A regrettable traffic accident occurred today in the city of Fes, where a horse-drawn cart collided with a luxury car parked on Ain Chkef Road. The incident took place around 15:40, raising concerns among drivers and citizens about road safety in the city. This accident reflects the dangers associated with the presence of horse-drawn carts on the streets, which can lead to serious accidents, as was recently the case.

This is not the first incident of its kind; members of a committee from FIFA nearly faced a similar accident during their visit to Al-Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, where a horse-drawn cart collided with the delegation’s vehicle, raising fears about the lack of necessary measures to protect visitors. The mayor emphasized the need to improve road safety conditions in the city in preparation for hosting major sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030.

Challenges Facing Major Cities

Despite ongoing efforts, major cities in Morocco face multiple challenges related to horse-drawn carts that detract from the city’s aesthetics and affect traffic flow. These carts, pulled by animals, have become a nightmare for drivers and contribute to traffic accidents. Local authorities have launched campaigns to address this phenomenon; however, these measures often face criticism due to the lack of suitable alternatives for vendors who rely on these carts for their livelihoods.

Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from local authorities and civil society to ensure road safety and enforce traffic laws strictly. Additionally, there is a need to consider alternative solutions to horse-drawn carts, such as promoting modern and sustainable transportation methods.

As preparations for hosting international sports events continue, significant improvements in infrastructure and attention to road safety are essential to ensure the success of these events and achieve their intended goals.
