Residents of Bouchabel Protest Water Scarcity Despite Proximity to Morocco’s Largest Dam

On December 26, 2024, residents of Bouchabel, a commune in the Taounate province, organized a peaceful march to protest the ongoing water crisis in their region, despite being situated near Al Wahda Dam, Morocco’s largest reservoir. The demonstrators paraded through the commune’s streets on donkeys, carrying empty barrels as a symbolic representation of their dire water shortage.

The march, which saw participation from many household heads, highlighted the community’s longstanding struggles. Protesters decried the lack of access to potable water and the scarcity of resources that jeopardize their daily lives. “We carry empty barrels because there’s no water to fill them,” one protester succinctly expressed, reflecting the harsh reality faced by the community.

Although Bouchabel is located near Al Wahda Dam, residents complain about marginalization and insufficient access to water resources.

The peaceful demonstration underscored the frustration felt by citizens, who lament the lack of tangible action from authorities to resolve the chronic crisis. While they demand consistent access to potable water, the community hopes this protest will initiate dialogue with officials to find practical and effective solutions to ensure their right to safe drinking water.
