Ifrane – Morocco News
As part of the ongoing momentum in Morocco’s agricultural sector, available information indicates that the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday, April 22, 2026, in Ifrane with the International Date Council. The agreement aims to develop the palm and date value chain and strengthen technical and scientific cooperation between both parties.
According to the same sources, the agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 18th edition of the International Agriculture Show in Morocco, held in Meknès, by Minister of Agriculture Ahmed El Bouari and Her Royal Highness Princess Sara bint Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Executive Director of the International Date Council.
This initiative seeks to establish an institutional framework for structured cooperation, based on the exchange of expertise and statistical and technical data, as well as enhanced coordination on issues related to the development of the palm and date sector—one of the key agricultural chains with both economic and environmental importance.
Areas of cooperation also include supporting training programs and capacity building through joint workshops, as well as promoting scientific research and innovation—particularly regarding the impact of climate change on date palm cultivation—and working toward sustainable solutions to preserve genetic resources and biodiversity in oasis regions.
In terms of product valorization, the partnership is expected to contribute to improving quality standards for Moroccan dates, especially the renowned Medjool variety, while encouraging innovation in post-harvest processing and transformation, thereby increasing added value and boosting competitiveness in international markets.
The agreement also aligns with efforts to enhance data exchange related to production, cultivated areas, and export capacities, contributing to greater market transparency and the development of global date trade.
In parallel, both parties held discussions emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral partnership and sharing experiences to address climate and economic challenges facing the sector.
This cooperation reflects a broader strategic direction aimed at enhancing agricultural value chains and ensuring their sustainability, reinforcing Morocco’s position in the global date sector.
