The Al-Hajeb Provincial Council is an elected body with broad powers to implement local development projects, including infrastructure and social services, yet it suffers from weak communication with citizens, raising questions about its transparency and the effectiveness of public engagement.
On many occasions, there is a lack of prior announcement regarding the council’s session dates and agendas, depriving residents of the opportunity to learn about the discussions or decisions taken within this body. This opacity hinders citizens’ real participation and diminishes their ability to submit proposals or provide feedback on important development projects.
Transparency is not merely a formal slogan but the foundation of building trust between the council and the community. Holding sessions behind closed doors and confidential discussions prevent the accountability of elected members and reduce the role of the people to merely voting in elections without genuine follow-up to daily work. Ultimately, this situation leads to a loss of trust between citizens and their institutions.
Additionally, the “Al-Hajeb Local Affairs Observatory” previously raised the necessity of establishing a communication window or platform that enables citizens to view council activities and updates. Although the deputy president of the provincial council, Mr. Mohamed Akzyou, confirmed that the project was underway and the platform would be launched soon, this commitment has yet to be realized.
The absence of this communication platform and transparency remains a major obstacle to promoting good governance and accountability. Urgent intervention is required to guarantee residents’ right to access council information and actively participate in local decision-making, which positively impacts the development of Al-Hajeb community and serves the interests of its citizens.
