Consumer Protection Associations Warn New Students and Their Families of Rising Scams by Overseas Study Agencies

Consumer protection associations have issued urgent warnings to new students and their families about the increasing scams led by fraudulent overseas study agencies during this period, calling on the relevant authorities to intensify monitoring and inspection campaigns.

Abdelkarim Chafai, President of the Regional Federation for Consumer Rights in the Souss-Massa region, warned of the emergence of seasonal agencies that exploit the summer period to carry out scams under the guise of offering fake services to facilitate studying abroad. In an interview with Hespress, he explained that some of these agencies rent temporary offices during the summer to deceive families into believing in their credibility, especially as students and their families actively search for international study destinations after the baccalaureate exams.

Chafai stressed the need for stricter oversight by the concerned authorities to protect students and their families from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes, noting that renting temporary offices is a tactic used by scammers to mislead victims.

Meanwhile, Ali Shtour, President of the Moroccan Association for the Defense of Consumer Rights, revealed that his association has received multiple phone complaints related to scams by overseas study agencies. In a statement to Hespress, he urged students and their families to verify the legitimacy of these agencies and their offers before making any payments, warning against dealing with agencies known only through social media platforms, which are the main channels for most fraud cases.

Shtour called on the authorities to intensify monitoring efforts and combat these practices, which negatively affect families and students’ academic progress, emphasizing that consumer protection remains a top priority in addressing this growing phenomenon.
