The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) is preparing to test a series of new refereeing technologies during the Club World Cup, set to take place this month in the United States. The move aims to enhance the accuracy and speed of officiating decisions and improve the viewing experience for fans.
One of the most anticipated innovations is an advanced version of the semi-automated offside detection system, powered by artificial intelligence. This technology builds upon what was used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It relies on a network of advanced cameras and sensors embedded in the ball, capable of transmitting 500 pieces of data per second—allowing for faster and more accurate offside decisions.
For the first time, FIFA will also enable fans inside the stadiums to watch referees’ video reviews live on giant screens, aiming to promote transparency and help the public better understand how key officiating decisions are made.
Additionally, the tournament will trial a new technology that involves fitting referees’ uniforms with cameras, providing a unique first-person perspective of the match. This will allow TV and online audiences to experience the game from the referee’s point of view.
Another innovation includes the introduction of modern tablets to manage and streamline player substitutions, replacing traditional paper-based systems and manual communications. This is part of FIFA’s broader push to modernize and simplify match-day operations.
These trials align with FIFA’s vision to develop refereeing tools and fully harness technology to improve match quality and enhance the fan experience around the globe.
