Farmers in Meknes and El Hajeb Warn of Potato Price Fluctuations and Import Lobbies

As challenges mount for Morocco’s agricultural sector, concerns are growing about the future of the potato crop. Prices are fluctuating in markets like never before, threatening the stability of the sector and raising alarms among farmers and civil society.

In this context, several farmers, particularly from the Meknes and El Hajeb regions, have broken their silence, warning of the repercussions of certain “import lobbies” dominating the markets. They threaten that the situation could worsen, jeopardizing the continuity of local agricultural production. In their statements, they emphasized that the sharp fluctuations in potato prices—ranging from sharp declines to sudden increases—are due to the absence of effective strategies to protect local products against the influx of imported goods.

These warnings coincide with increasing complaints from farmers about weak government support and the lack of clear mechanisms to shield the national sector from external competition. They argue that “the situation has become unbearable” in light of insufficient oversight of import markets and rising local production costs.

While farmers await urgent interventions from the concerned authorities, civil society organizations stress the need for comprehensive measures to protect local farmers. They point out that Morocco’s agricultural sector faces numerous challenges, including water scarcity and price fluctuations. However, the entry of imported products into local markets could exacerbate the crisis faced by farmers.

These warnings align with calls for adopting incentive policies to support local production and ensure the protection of agricultural supply chains. Additionally, there is a need to raise consumer awareness about the importance of supporting national products. Various agricultural stakeholders advocate for the development of long-term strategies aimed at improving farmers’ conditions and strengthening the national economy in the face of global economic challenges.

As uncertainty surrounds how to address this issue, the pressing question remains: Will the Moroccan government take decisive steps to protect farmers and ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector?
