Rabat – The latest data concerning dam reservoirs across Morocco’s water basins reveals notable disparities in filling rates, highlighting a clear imbalance in the distribution of water resources. The total volume of stored water currently stands at 6734.8 million cubic meters, with an overall filling rate of 40.2%. Notably, some basins maintain high water levels, while others suffer from low reserves.
In this context, the Sebou Basin stands out as the most filled, with a filling rate of 63.58%, equivalent to 2907.30 million cubic meters. It is followed by the Bouregreg Basin with a filling rate of 64.56% and a volume of 689.35 million cubic meters, and then the Loukkos Basin, which recorded a rate of 61.65% with a reserve of 1177.82 million cubic meters. For its part, the Moulouya Basin recorded a filling rate of 41.95%, with a water volume of approximately 300.86 million cubic meters, while the water reserve in the Tensift Basin reached 120.28 million cubic meters with a filling rate of 45.92%.
Conversely, some basins are experiencing a significant lack of filling, such as the Souss-Massa Basin, where the filling rate did not exceed 21.98%, with a volume of 160.72 million cubic meters, and the Guir-Ziz-Rhéris Basin, whose reserve reached 323.51 million cubic meters with a filling rate not exceeding 20.25%. The Draâ-Oued Noun Basin also recorded a rate of 34.90%, with a reserve of 365.79 million cubic meters. The Oum Er-Rbia Basin recorded the lowest filling rate among the various basins, not exceeding 12.45%, with a water volume of 616.77 million cubic meters, raising concerns about its critical situation in light of climate change and increasing pressure on water resources.
These figures reflect a clear spatial disparity in the availability of water resources among the basins. This situation necessitates the strengthening of integrated public policies in the field of water management, with the adoption of innovative solutions that take into account the specificities of each territorial area and direct efforts towards the sustainable and equitable use of this vital resource.
