The US House of Representatives passed Resolution H.RES.251 on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the establishment of historical and diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, and praising the strong and multi-dimensional partnership that has linked the two countries since 1777.
The resolution highlights the profound symbolism of Morocco as the first country to recognize the independence of the United States on December 1, 1777, making this relationship one of the oldest continuous diplomatic relations in American history. The resolution also noted the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1787, which remains in effect to this day, as well as Morocco’s granting of the American Legation in Tangier in 1821, the first American diplomatic property outside the country.
In addition to the historical aspect, the resolution praised Morocco’s strategic position, emphasizing the depth of the security and economic partnership, as Morocco is the only African country that has a free trade agreement with the United States, in addition to close cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism, and joint military exercises, most notably the “African Lion” maneuvers.
The resolution also commends the contributions of the Moroccan-American community in enhancing diversity within American society, the Kingdom of Morocco’s commitment to religious tolerance and the protection of Jewish communities, and its role in promoting interfaith dialogue.
The US Congress praised Morocco’s involvement in the “Abraham Accords” and its efforts to promote regional and international stability, calling for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of health, education, and addressing global challenges.
This resolution comes as an official American step to celebrate this long-standing relationship by 2027, confirming the great appreciation that the Kingdom of Morocco enjoys as a reliable and strategic partner of the United States of America.
