In a surprising development just one month before the start of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast, the host country for the tournament, has officially announced its withdrawal from organizing this edition.
Just one month before the start of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, initially scheduled between April 26 and May 18, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) has informed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that it will no longer host the tournament.
An official statement issued by the FIF said: “Hereby, President Yacine Idriss Diallo, President of the FIF and President of the Local Organizing Committee for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, informs you that by official letter, the government has notified the Ivorian Football Federation of Ivory Coast’s withdrawal from hosting the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.”
The statement added: “Following the instructions of the FIF President, the Executive Director conveyed this information to the CAF Secretary General on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. The President wishes to express his deep gratitude to everyone for their commitment and the work accomplished in organizing this tournament, and assures you that everyone will be informed of the steps CAF will take regarding this situation.”
This withdrawal represents another blow to the CAF, which will have to revise its schedule for the third time this year. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco, has been postponed to December due to the lack of readiness of the Kingdom’s stadiums. The same applies to the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be held in August 2025 instead of February in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Some media reports suggest that Morocco could save this edition of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. However, with exactly one month left until the tournament, this seems difficult. Many of the country’s stadiums are currently undergoing renovation or reconstruction. Therefore, Morocco will not be able to host this tournament unless it is postponed.
