As part of ongoing security efforts to combat cybercrime and protect digital data, the Regional Judicial Police Unit in Fez referred eight individuals to the competent public prosecutor on Thursday, February 20. They are suspected of involvement in serious criminal activities, including hacking digital processing systems, identity fraud, extortion, and fraud.
Investigations revealed that the suspects used malicious software to hack the electronic appointment booking system for visa applications to several European countries. This system is managed by a subcontracted company responsible for handling visa application services on behalf of certain foreign diplomatic representations in Morocco.
Further inquiries indicated that the network also targeted the customer database of an insurance company, exploiting personal identities to monopolize visa appointment bookings. These appointments were then illegally sold through intermediaries near a consulate in Fez, extorting victims for financial gain.
With coordination from the General Directorate for National Territory Surveillance, technical investigations and field inquiries led to the identification of 29 victims affected by these fraudulent activities. Their statements were officially documented, aiding in identifying and arresting eight suspects.
The detainees have been placed under judicial custody as part of an ongoing investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor. Authorities continue to investigate to uncover all individuals involved and bring them to justice.
