US-Russian talks in Riyadh : A step towards normalizing relations and preparing for a summit between US President Trump and his Russian counterpart Putin

In a significant step towards improving strained relations between the United States and Russia, senior officials from both countries, including the US and Russian foreign ministers, began talks in Riyadh on Tuesday, aimed at paving the way for a possible summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia, according to AFP.

Footage emerged from the meeting, which took place in the Diriyah Palace northwest of Riyadh, where Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Saudi National Security Advisor Musaed bin Mohammed al-Aiban participated, who acted as mediators between the American and Russian delegations, from the US side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, while the Russian side was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov.

This meeting is the first of its kind between the two sides since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and as part of these talks, President Trump announced that he intends to hold his first meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia after a phone call between them, with the aim of trying to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a press statement in Riyadh that the talks are not intended to negotiate issues related to Ukraine, but are a follow-up to the phone call between Presidents Trump and Putin, with the aim of exploring ways to move forward in bilateral relations, for his part, Ushakov emphasized that these talks represent the beginning of an application in relations between Washington and Moscow.

Later that same week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an official visit to Riyadh, with his spokesperson announcing that he had no plans to hold meetings with US or Russian officials during the visit.

In Riyadh, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the regional situation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with a focus on developments in the Gaza Strip, in light of Trump’s proposals to displace the Palestinian population.
