On January 13, Ibn Al-Athir School in the Mariniyine district of Fez hosted a unique celebration to mark the Amazigh New Year, a national holiday established by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This initiative emphasizes the importance of Amazigh identity and culture, enshrined as a fundamental part of Morocco’s national fabric in the 2011 Constitution.
Speaking to “Fes News,” Mohamed Barzouq, President of the National Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations in Morocco, Fez branch, highlighted the significance of this day in promoting Morocco’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Barzouq noted that celebrating the Amazigh New Year has become a national occasion to honor Amazigh traditions and integrate them into educational and social contexts.
The event, organized by the Regional Directorate of Education in collaboration with the Regional Academy of Education and Training and the Mariniyine district, featured a diverse program. Folkloric performances by local groups showcased traditional Amazigh songs and music. Attendees enjoyed displays of Amazigh customs, including traditional clothing, local dishes, and the symbolic Amazigh tent, embodying the depth of Morocco’s cultural heritage.
The celebration saw enthusiastic participation from students across public and private schools. Children performed songs and creative acts that reflected the richness of Moroccan cultural diversity and their pride in their national identity.
Barzouq also emphasized the importance of Fez, as Morocco’s intellectual capital, and the Mariniyine district in particular, as a fitting location for such a meaningful celebration. He praised the city’s historic and cultural role in preserving Morocco’s diverse heritage.
In his concluding remarks, Barzouq commended the efforts of all parties involved in organizing this event, stressing its significance in instilling national pride and fostering an appreciation of Amazigh heritage among the younger generations.
