Council Meeting in Zouagha Canceled Due to Opposition Boycott Over Leadership Concerns

The scheduled meeting of the Zouagha District Council on Friday, January 3, 2025, was canceled due to a lack of quorum caused by the opposition’s boycott. This absence was in protest of what they described as unilateral decision-making by the council president, Mr. Ismail Jay Mansouri.

The meeting’s agenda included significant topics such as presenting a report on council activities between sessions, reviewing reports from standing committees, discussing proposals to name streets and public squares, implementing signage in vacant areas to prevent illegal dumping, improving the public lighting network, and proposing the construction of a modern depot for the district.

The opposition leveled harsh criticisms and accusations against the president, citing a lack of participatory decision-making. They claimed that most decisions are made unilaterally, leading to a deterioration in several critical areas. They also pointed to delays in implementing agreed-upon paving projects, with some being relocated to more developed areas, which they argued marginalized residents’ rightful interests. Additionally, they condemned alleged mismanagement of the district’s vehicle fleet and the awarding of certain tenders to specific individuals since the council’s inception.

In an exclusive statement to Fes News, a member of the Popular Movement Party emphasized the urgent need to reassess local governance practices in the Zouagha District. He warned that the absence of participatory decision-making would exacerbate the challenges faced by residents.

While many pressing points awaited discussion and voting, the lack of quorum prevented the meeting from proceeding, highlighting the growing tensions between the majority and the opposition regarding the district’s management.

The next session is expected to proceed even if the quorum remains unmet, as per council regulations.
