Moroccan Foreign Minister Affirms Kingdom’s Position on Recent Developments in Syria

Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita expressed Morocco’s stance on the recent developments in Syria on Monday, following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

During a joint press conference with former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a candidate for the position of African Union Commission President, Bourita stated that Morocco “is closely following the rapid and significant developments in Syria.”

The minister reiterated Morocco’s clear position towards Syria, in line with King Mohammed VI’s directives, which favors “preserving territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and the unity of the Syrian people.”

Bourita also expressed Morocco’s hope that these developments will bring lasting stability to Syria, meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, and pave the way for a better future.

The minister reminded that Morocco closed its embassy in Syria in 2012 and requested Damascus to close its diplomatic mission in Rabat.

Bourita concluded by affirming that Morocco, committed to Syria’s sovereignty over its territory and rejecting any interference in its internal affairs, supports any political solution that guarantees the rights of the Syrian people.
