King Mohammed VI is scheduled to make an official visit to Qatar this Wednesday, where he will meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. This visit holds special significance as it marks the Moroccan monarch’s first trip to Qatar since the Gulf crisis that erupted in 2017.
This anticipated visit brings to mind Morocco’s positive stance towards Qatar during the Gulf crisis. In June 2017, while Qatar was facing a regional blockade, Morocco decided to send food aid to Doha in a notable gesture of solidarity.
At the time, Morocco described its decision to send food aid as a “gesture of solidarity” that had “no connection to the political aspects of the crisis between Qatar and other sister countries.” This decision came at the behest of King Mohammed VI, underscoring the depth of relations between the two nations.
This royal visit comes at a time when Gulf relations have seen notable improvement following the reconciliation that took place in January 2021. The visit is expected to open new horizons for cooperation between Morocco and Qatar in various fields, especially given the close historical ties between the two countries.
This high-level visit reflects Morocco’s keenness to strengthen its relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in general, and Qatar in particular, as part of its balanced foreign policy aimed at consolidating cooperation with various regional partners.
