Trump’s Return to the White House Sows Unease in Algeria

Algeria – Algeria is experiencing a state of concern and anticipation after the return of former President Donald Trump to the White House, amid reports of nominations of strong Republican figures to sovereign positions that could affect the United States’ foreign policy towards Algeria.

One of the most prominent candidates for the position of Secretary of State is Republican Senator Marco Rubio, known for his strict positions against Algeria, which has caused the Algerian regime to live in a state of tension and apprehension.

Marco Rubio is considered one of the most prominent Republican figures who adopt hostile positions towards Algeria. He had previously, in 2022, called on the current President Joe Biden’s administration to impose sanctions on Algeria due to its supportive position towards Russia in its war against Ukraine. Algeria is considered one of the largest importers of Russian arms in the world, putting it at odds with American policies seeking to reduce Russian influence.

Rubio wields great influence among Republican circles and is seen as viewing Algeria as a country that opposes American interests in North Africa and supports anti-Western alliances. The possibility of his appointment as Secretary of State has raised the concern of the Algerian regime, which fears an increase in American pressure through the imposition of sanctions or positions opposing its regional ambitions.

With growing regional and international tensions, the Algerian regime fears that this political shift in Washington will have a direct impact on US-Algerian relations, especially with Trump’s strict policies towards Russia’s allies.
