A significant security meeting took place this morning in Fes at the headquarters of the Wilaya of Security, attended by Abdel Rahman Afifi, Deputy Regional Director of Security in Fes, alongside the head of the Tourist Police, the head of the first security district, and the head of the judicial police in the first district.
The meeting also included representatives from civil society, such as Karim Al-Malhi, President of the Committee for the Rehabilitation of Commercial Activities in the Old Cities, the head of the Chamber of Industry, Commerce, and Services for the Fes-Meknes region, MP Khaled Al-Ajli, Moulay Mehdi Al-Iraqi, Deputy Head of the Chamber, and Abdel Ilah Al-Slasi, President of the Committee for Supporting Workers in the Moulay Yacoub Region.
The discussion centered around strengthening the security situation in the Fes Medina district, with several proposals put forward, including:
- Activating security cameras: To enhance surveillance and ensure the safety of citizens and visitors.
- Increasing the number of police patrols: In the first district to reinforce police presence and reduce crime.
- Boosting the Tourist Police: Proposing an increase in the number of tourist police officers to match the level in Marrakech, which has 500 officers compared to Fes’ 70, with a suggestion to make them available 24/7.
- Reopening closed auxiliary forces centers: Specifically in the Bab Ftouh, Najjarine, and Kasbah areas, to bolster security.
- Banning motorcycles inside the old city walls: To reduce potential risks to pedestrians and prevent their use in thefts.
- Finding solutions for mentally ill individuals: Who pose a security threat to residents and tourists.
Dr. Abdel Rahman Afifi responded positively to these proposals, which were well-received by attendees. Praise was also given to the efforts of the head of the security district and all security officials in maintaining safety and stability in the city.
This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security in the historic city of Fes, particularly with the growing security challenges. It is noteworthy that the Fes Security Directorate is working on comprehensive security plans, including activating systematic security protocols to ensure the safety of major international and continental sporting events the city will host, such as the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the 2030 World Cup.
Recently, the city has also reinstated a security checkpoint at the entrance to Fes on the Imouzzer road to reinforce security and intensify surveillance of all incoming visitors.
These joint efforts between the security forces and civil society are expected to contribute to strengthening security and stability in Fes, ensuring the safety of both citizens and visitors.
