The African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, based in Addis Ababa, has reported approximately 38,300 monkeypox cases in Africa since the beginning of this year, including 7,339 confirmed cases and 979 deaths.
During an online press conference, the Centre’s Director-General, Jean Kaseya, noted that the last week alone saw 3,186 new infections, including 489 confirmed cases and 53 deaths.
He emphasized that the rate of confirmed infections has risen by 300% in 2024 compared to 2023.
In August, the African Centre and the World Health Organization declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency on the continent.
In response to this challenge, a continental response plan was launched in collaboration with the World Health Organization, with a budget of $600 million over six months.
