“African Lion 2026” strengthens the military partnership between Morocco and the United States through high-level talks between military officials

Morocco is witnessing significant military momentum in 2026 במסגרת the “African Lion” exercises, as the United States conducts tests of a new soldier-tracking system known as “Guardian.” At the same time, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces are taking part in unprecedented technological trials, notably involving the advanced military communication system “Link-16.”

The “Guardian” system is being tested at the Southern Zone Command headquarters in Agadir as part of the largest military exercise led by United States Africa Command. The drills involve more than 5,600 military personnel from over 40 countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal.

Still in its experimental phase, the system represents an advanced digital tool that enables near real-time tracking of soldiers’ movements, with data updates in under 30 seconds. This capability provides military commanders with precise and rapid situational awareness, allowing for more effective field decision-making.

According to U.S. military officials, the innovation aims to enhance operational management and reduce reliance on traditional reporting methods by unifying data and improving information accuracy in complex environments.

Meanwhile, Morocco has taken a significant step forward in military cooperation by participating in tests of the “Link-16” system—a highly secure tactical communication network that was, until recently, limited to member states of the NATO.

This system has enabled the exchange of encrypted operational information in real time between Moroccan and U.S. units across air, land, and maritime domains, in what has been described as a first-of-its-kind experience in Africa.

Officials emphasized that this development reflects a high level of strategic trust between Morocco and the United States, while also opening new prospects for strengthening interoperability between forces, amid rapid transformations in the global military landscape.

The outcomes of these trials are expected to serve as a foundation for further development of military cooperation, particularly as armed forces increasingly shift toward digitalized operations and data-driven battlefield management.
