The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Sunday evening the opening of a disciplinary investigation into the incidents that followed the match between Algeria national football team and Nigeria national football team, played in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, according to Africa Soccer.
CAF explained that several Algerian players, along with members of the technical staff, engaged in direct protests against the refereeing team immediately after the final whistle, expressing their اعتراض to certain officiating decisions during the match.
The continental body noted that tensions escalated noticeably after the game, when some members of the Algerian delegation reportedly pursued the referees inside the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms. CAF described this behavior as unacceptable and contrary to the disciplinary laws and regulations governing African competitions.
The statement added that the Disciplinary Committee is also reviewing additional reports alleging altercations and scuffles involving journalists and members of media crews in the vicinity of the stadium after the match, indicating that the state of tension extended beyond the pitch.
CAF stressed that such actions, if confirmed, are subject to accountability in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory procedures, underscoring that the safety of referees and media professionals, as well as respect for the rules, are fundamental principles that cannot be compromised.
The Confederation further emphasized that opening this investigation reflects its commitment to ensuring respect for disciplinary rules and sportsmanship within continental competitions, and to preserving the tournament’s image and organizational credibility.
CAF concluded by stating that the appropriate disciplinary decisions and sanctions will be announced once all stages of the investigation are completed, reaffirming its commitment to applying regulatory and disciplinary rules to all teams and parties concerned without exception, in full compliance with established procedures.
