Ifrane on High Alert: Three Simultaneous Operations to Evacuate Critical Patients Amid Cold Wave and Heavy Snowfall

Ifrane Province witnessed three simultaneous emergency response operations on the night of Sunday, 28 December 2025, involving the evacuation of critically ill patients from Douar Asmar (Oued Ifrane commune) and Timahdite. Among the cases was a pregnant woman whose condition required urgent transfer to 20 August Hospital in Azrou, amid a severe cold wave and heavy snowfall that made access to some mountainous areas extremely difficult.

According to information received by Fes News, one of the interventions was launched after local authorities were alerted on Saturday, 27 December 2025, about the deterioration of an elderly man’s health in Douar Asmar—an area inaccessible by usual means. Airlift evacuation was also not possible due to weather conditions and the lack of required safety parameters.

On Sunday, 28 December 2025, a field intervention plan was resumed under the supervision of the provincial governor, with coordination between the local authorities in Oued Ifrane, Civil Protection, the Royal Gendarmerie, Auxiliary Forces, and the Provincial Directorate of Equipment, alongside a medical team from the provincial delegation of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. The operation relied on logistical resources including a snowmobile, a bulldozer, snowplows, and ice-removal equipment.

The same sources indicated that snow depth—exceeding two meters on certain sections—prevented machinery from advancing along parts of the route, forcing response teams to walk more than four kilometers to reach the location. Once there, first aid was administered on site before securing the patient’s transfer to 20 August Hospital in Azrou, where he underwent the necessary examinations and treatment and was placed under medical observation.

In parallel, other health teams from the Ifrane provincial delegation—coordinating with the Level 2 rural health center and the local emergency unit in Timahdite—evacuated another patient in critical condition while ensuring continuity of care during transport. They also assisted a pregnant woman whose case required close monitoring and urgent transfer. Both cases were likewise referred to 20 August Hospital in Azrou, which, according to the same information, remained on standby to receive emergency cases during the cold spell.

Provincial authorities monitored these operations on the ground, emphasizing the need to provide the necessary care for urgent cases, especially given the impact of the cold wave on mountain populations and vulnerable groups.

The information also highlighted the role of mobile medical and nursing teams, and the coordination among field responders, which contributed to successfully carrying out the three interventions under harsh weather conditions.
