Fes News – Meknes
In a significant move aimed at ending the long-standing struggles of Meknes residents with poor street lighting, the President of the Municipal Council has revealed details of a “mega-project” set to transform the city’s nocturnal landscape, asserting that a final solution is now only a matter of time.
Technical Delay Awaiting Ministry Approval
During a press statement following the latest council session, the President clarified that the vote on the tender specifications (Cahier des Charges) for the delegated management of the public lighting sector has been temporarily postponed. The leadership attributed this delay to the pending final review by the Ministry of Interior, which is currently conducting a thorough study to ensure the project’s long-term efficiency.
The President reassured the public that the Council is prepared to convene an extraordinary session or approve the file early next year as soon as it is received, officially moving into the long-awaited delegated management phase.
Massive Budget for a Complete Overhaul
The local official emphasized that the upcoming deal is the largest of its kind for this sector in Meknes, with an investment budget totaling approximately 200 million Dirhams (20 billion Centimes). This substantial funding will not be limited to mere maintenance but will primarily focus on:
- Infrastructure Renewal: A comprehensive replacement of the network, as more than 50% of the current system is obsolete or dilapidated.
- Technical Efficiency: Replacing outdated equipment with modern technology that meets contemporary technical standards and promotes energy efficiency.
Transitional Phase
While waiting for the new management contract to take effect, the President noted that the Regional Company will continue to manage the facility on a temporary basis. This ensures continuity of service and prevents total blackouts in city streets and neighborhoods until the new agreement is implemented next year.
Residents of the Ismaili capital hold high hopes that this project will restore vitality and aesthetic appeal to the city’s streets, while enhancing the sense of safety and security across all districts.
