Fes: Residents of Zouagha District Denounce Breakdown of Public Lighting and Demand Urgent Intervention to Secure Streets

Fes – November 24, 2025

Residents of Zouagha district in the Fes prefecture expressed their strong anger over the breakdown of a large number of public lighting lamps in public streets, especially in the territory of the Hay Jadid administrative annex, which endangers citizens’ safety and provides cover for suspicious activities. Local sources from the residents told the newspaper that repeated attempts to contact the maintenance service affiliated with the district have been fruitless, despite the arrival of a technical team to the site with an equipped vehicle without completing any tangible repairs.

The main complaints include the absence of lighting in several neighborhoods, such as Hay Jadid, Al-Anbara, and Ain Semen, where pitch darkness has become a daily threat to residents, particularly women and children who move at night or early morning for prayer purposes or going to their workplaces. Sources indicated that these conditions increase residents’ fears of traffic accidents or assaults, amid rapid demographic and urban growth of the area without providing adequate infrastructure.

In a related context, these complaints recalled previous problems in the district, where media reports revealed suspicions of corruption and violations in the management of water and electricity services, including suspicious deals and accusations of embezzlement of public funds, leading to complaints filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Fes against district officials. The latest of these complaints in June 2025 concerned pressure and blackmail to facilitate illegal deals in the electricity sector, with some referred to the Regional Judicial Police Brigade. Similar complaints were recorded in March 2025 during Ramadan, where the absence of lighting provoked residents’ dissatisfaction due to intense nighttime movement.

The newspaper’s sources from the residents demand urgent intervention from the relevant authorities, including monitoring maintenance operations and holding officials accountable for delays. They also stressed the responsibility of the Zouagha district council, chaired by Ismail Jay Al-Mansouri, to effectively represent residents, demanding the allocation of an emergency budget to repair lighting and ensure law enforcement without favoritism or delay. They confirmed that this negligence weakens trust in local institutions and exacerbates the suffering of residents in an area already suffering from a lack of basic services.

It should be noted that Zouagha district is witnessing rapid urban growth, requiring immediate infrastructure enhancement, according to a written question submitted by MP Lahcen Wazani to the Minister of Interior last March, which highlighted the absence of lighting as a security and health threat to residents.
