Spain and Morocco Dismantle Cross-Border Cannabis Trafficking Network Using Advanced Drones

Madrid – November 12, 2025 – The Spanish Civil Guard announced today, Wednesday, the dismantling of a cross-border criminal network specialized in smuggling cannabis using advanced drones, thanks to close security cooperation with the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie.

The Civil Guard stated in an official statement that the joint operation resulted in neutralizing the network, which was capable of transporting up to 200 kilograms of cannabis into Spain in a single night, through operating several drones specially designed and assembled for this purpose.

Operation Details and Results

The operation came following the detection of suspicious aerial movements, resulting in the seizure of eight drones ready for use, and ten others under assembly, alongside the arrest of nine suspects.

Investigations revealed that the drones took off from the town of Alcalá de los Gazules in the Andalusia region, then crossed into Morocco to load drugs, before returning to Spain to drop them aerially over the areas of Vejer de la Frontera or Tarifa. On nights with light winds, the network was capable of operating up to ten drones simultaneously, enabling it to introduce large quantities of drugs into Spanish territory.

Strengthening Security Cooperation Between the Two Countries

The Civil Guard confirmed that the operation’s success reflects the depth of the security partnership between Spain and Morocco, particularly in combating cross-border organized crime and the use of advanced technology in smuggling. This achievement comes in the context of joint efforts to confront emerging threats from the use of drones in illegal activities.

The dismantling of this network is considered a strong blow to drug traffickers and confirms the effectiveness of security coordination between the Royal Gendarmerie and the Civil Guard in protecting shared borders.
