Nicolas Sarkozy Becomes First French President to Face Prison for Illegal Campaign Financing

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy (70 years old) is set to enter La Santé prison in Paris on October 21, 2025, to serve a five-year sentence issued against him in a case involving illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign. This makes Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, the first former European Union president to actually face imprisonment following conviction for financial crimes.

According to media reports, La Santé prison was chosen for security reasons, as it is one of Paris’s detention centers with a special protection unit dedicated to public figures, along with Fleury-Mérogis prison in the southern suburbs of the capital. These measures aim to ensure the former president’s safety during his incarceration.

On September 25, 2025, the Paris court sentenced Sarkozy to five years in prison, describing the acts attributed to him as “of exceptional gravity.” The court found that Sarkozy allowed close associates to communicate with the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to secure illegal funding for his 2007 presidential campaign in an unlawful manner.

Despite filing an appeal against the ruling, the court issued a suspended arrest warrant requiring Sarkozy to enter prison while granting him a grace period to settle his personal affairs before the appointed date. This case marks a historic precedent in France, as no former president had previously been subjected to imprisonment for similar financial crimes.
