The body of Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mtetwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, aged 58, was found in Paris after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in the Port Maillot area, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles.
According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the ambassador’s body was discovered beneath the hotel where he resided on the 22nd floor, with initial investigations indicating that he fell from the window of his room.
The mysterious circumstances of the incident have prompted French authorities to launch a thorough investigation to determine the true nature of the event. It remains unclear whether this was an accidental fall or a suicide attempt. A spokesperson for the Paris police declined to provide further comments, and no official statement has been issued by the South African embassy.
Sources stated that the ambassador’s wife reported him missing after receiving a troubling text message from him, which accelerated the search efforts that ultimately led to the discovery of his body.
The late ambassador was considered one of South Africa’s most prominent diplomats in Europe. He had served in Paris for over two years and was responsible for important political and economic dossiers linking his country with France and the European Union.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the incident and announced that it will issue an official statement once it receives more details from the French authorities.
