Macron Calls for UN-Mandated Stabilization Mission in Gaza

PARIS – On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his call for a “stabilization mission under a UN mandate” in Gaza, warning of an “announced disaster” and a “headlong rush into a permanent war” following the announcement of an Israeli plan to take control of Gaza City.

According to a statement from the Élysée Palace, Macron described the announcement by Israeli authorities “to expand its operations to Gaza City and the Al-Mawasi camps, and its reoccupation by Israel” as “an announced disaster of unprecedented gravity and a headlong rush into a permanent war.”

The French President added that “Israeli hostages and the populations of Gaza will continue to be the primary victims of this strategy.”

Macron’s statement marks his first reaction to the plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to take control of Gaza City and target the last strongholds of Hamas, a plan that has drawn sharp criticism from around the world. In contrast, the Israeli Prime Minister asserts that this option is “the best way to finish the war” against Hamas in Gaza.

The French President proposed the creation of “an international coalition under a UN mandate,” describing it as “the priority” in order to “fight terrorism, stabilize Gaza, support its populations, and establish governance for peace and stability.”

“We laid the only credible foundations for this with Saudi Arabia in New York, obtaining for the first time a unanimous call from regional actors for the disarmament of Hamas and the release of the hostages,” he added.

The idea for such a mission was first put forward on July 30th during a conference at the UN that resulted in a declaration by 17 countries, including Qatar and Egypt. It was decided that this mission would be intended to protect the civilian population, “support the transfer of security responsibilities” to the Palestinian Authority, and provide “security guarantees for Palestine and Israel, including the monitoring” of a future ceasefire.

“The Security Council must now work to establish this mission and grant it a mandate. I have asked my teams to work on this without delay with our partners,” President Macron concluded.

This French stance comes in the context of ongoing international diplomatic efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Gaza, at a time when military tensions continue and humanitarian suffering in the Strip is escalating.
