Following a dramatic and eventful final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) protesting the refereeing decisions during the match.
The FRMF contests a decision deemed unfair, which involved the cancellation of a crucial penalty initially awarded to the Moroccan national team, the “Atlas Lionesses,” in their 3-2 defeat to Nigeria. This loss was bitter for Morocco, who delivered a heroic performance on home soil, leading 2-0 at halftime before conceding three goals in the second half to the “Super Falcons” of Nigeria.
The controversy centers around the annulment of a penalty for Morocco after a review using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. This contentious decision came at a 2-2 tie and near the end of the match, a turning point that directly influenced the final outcome.
National coach Jorge Vilda pointed to this decision as one of the key factors that affected the course of the game, alongside his team’s fatigue in the second half.
By filing this formal complaint, the FRMF not only expresses its disappointment with the match result but also asserts its commitment to demanding greater fairness and transparency in refereeing decisions during continental competitions. This incident has reignited debates about the effectiveness and application of the VAR system in African football.
