The Moroccan women’s national team, known as the Atlas Lionesses, secured their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening following a thrilling semi-final match against Ghana held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw after regular time, and neither team was able to break the deadlock during the extra time periods, leading to a penalty shootout. The Atlas Lionesses triumphed 4-3 in penalties, showcasing great determination and fighting spirit throughout the contest.
Coach Jorge Vilda had announced the starting lineup earlier, with the team demonstrating throughout the tournament a solid defense and effective attack, establishing Morocco as one of the top contenders for the continental title.
In the other semi-final, Nigeria advanced to the final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Nigeria opened the scoring with a penalty converted by Rasheedat Ajibade in the 45th minute, followed by an equalizer from South Africa’s Linda Motlhalo in the 60th minute. Michelle Chinwendu Alozie then secured the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time.
Nigeria had reached the semi-finals by convincingly beating Zambia 5-0, while South Africa advanced after a penalty shootout win (4-1) over Senegal following a goalless draw in regular and extra time in the quarter-finals.
