Club World Cup: Bounou and Hakimi Included in the Tournament’s Best XI

Two Moroccan players stood out prominently throughout the Club World Cup held in the United States: Al-Hilal’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and Paris Saint-Germain’s right-back Achraf Hakimi.

On Monday, the day after the Club World Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea (0-3), DAZN—the official broadcaster of this first edition featuring 32 teams—announced the tournament’s best XI. Unsurprisingly, two Atlas Lions were included.

Following his heroic performances that helped Al-Hilal reach the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup, it was expected to see Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou on the list of the tournament’s best players. His epic matches against Manchester City (3-4) and Real Madrid (1-1) remain highlights of the competition.

As for his compatriot and national team captain Achraf Hakimi, he made an impact from PSG’s first match in the tournament. With two goals and two assists in seven matches, the Moroccan did not disappoint—except in the final, where, like many of his teammates, he appeared to be “off form.” Notably, this marks the fifth time Hakimi has been included in the Club World Cup’s best XI.

The rest of the best XI includes notable names such as Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Marc Cucurella, Vitinha, Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Jhon Arias, and Gonzalo Garcia. The lineup features four players from the winning team, three from the runner-up, one from Al-Hilal, one from Fluminense FC, and one from Real Madrid.
