Diamond League: Soufiane El Bakkali Wins 3000m Steeplechase in Monaco

Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali claimed victory in the 3000m steeplechase at the Monaco Diamond League meeting on Friday, finishing with a time of 8:03.18.

Another Moroccan competitor, Salaheddine Ben Yazide, secured fourth place with a personal best of 8:06.44, improving on his previous record of 8:11.40.

The podium was completed by Japan’s Ryuji Miura in second place with 8:03.43, and Kenyan Edmund Serem in third with 8:04.00.

In related events, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Femke Bol thrilled the crowd on Friday evening in Monaco by recording the world’s best performances of the season in the 800m and 400m hurdles, respectively, alongside Noah Lyles, who made a strong return in the 200m.

For the 20-year-old Kenyan Wanyonyi, the evening held even greater promise as there was an attempt to break the world record in the 800m, set by his compatriot David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympics with a time of 1:40.91.

Despite a star-studded field resembling an Olympic final, Wanyonyi was unable to surpass the “wavelight” pacing the world record time, although he launched a strong final lap.

Wanyonyi finished the race in 1:41.44, the fastest time of the year and a new meeting record, ahead of American indoor world champion Josh Hoey (1:42.01) and Algerian bronze medalist at Paris, Djamel Sedjati (1:42.20).
