The Moroccan women’s national football team, nicknamed “Atlas Lionesses,” staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-2 in their Group A second-round match on Wednesday evening.
The Congolese opened the scoring early, with Kingika Nankiji finding the net in the sixth minute with a powerful shot that left goalkeeper Rmichi with no chance.
However, the Atlas Lionesses responded strongly, creating several scoring opportunities. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak capitalized on a rebound to equalize in the 24th minute. Just before halftime, Ghizlane scored her second goal in the 43rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by the Congolese players, ending the first half with Morocco leading 2-1.
In the second half, the game remained competitive. The Congolese team managed to equalize in the 70th minute through substitute Flavien Mwati.
But Morocco’s response was swift. Ghizlane Chebbak, the star of the match, scored her third personal goal and Morocco’s third goal just two minutes later, in the 73rd minute, regaining the lead for her team.
In the final minutes, Congo made repeated attempts to equalize, but the Moroccan team maintained its composure and possession. In the 80th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco after Anissa Lahmari was fouled inside the box. Yasmine Mrabet successfully converted the penalty, scoring the fourth goal and sealing the Atlas Lionesses’ victory.
With this result, the Atlas Lionesses raised their points tally to four, matching Zambia, who earlier defeated Senegal 3-2.
Morocco will face Senegal next Saturday in a decisive match to secure their qualification for the next round of the tournament.
