On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) commemorated the 21st anniversary of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) official recognition of the Tifinagh script. The event was held at the Institute’s headquarters in Rabat under the theme: “Tifinagh at the Heart of the Digital Transformation.”
Organized by the Institute’s Center for Informatics Studies and Communication Systems, the celebration showcased scientific and technical efforts aimed at integrating the Amazigh language into the digital ecosystem and artificial intelligence through projects focusing on machine translation, text-to-speech conversion, and the development of versatile lexical databases.
Empowering Amazigh in the Digital Space
In her keynote speech, Souham Boulaqnadel, Director of the Center, emphasized that this annual milestone symbolizes a commitment to collaborative research and openness towards scientific and digital institutions. She highlighted the primary challenge today: ensuring the Amazigh language remains vibrant within the rapidly evolving digital transformation, especially amid emerging AI technologies.
Boulaqnadel also recalled pioneering digital initiatives led by IRCAM, including the development of educational and interactive tools designed for both children and adults, and the expansion of Tifinagh usage across modern digital platforms.
Artificial Intelligence and Language Challenges
The event featured a scientific presentation by Dr. Habib Belhamer, professor at Hassan II University in Casablanca, titled: “Artificial Intelligence: A Linguistic Revolution and Ethical Dilemmas.” Dr. Belhamer underscored AI’s profound impacts on various fields, particularly natural language processing, while cautioning against data biases and stressing the importance of digital ethics.
Distinguished Official and Academic Presence
The ceremony was attended by IRCAM’s Dean Ahmed Boukous, Secretary General Hussein Al-Mujahid, and a distinguished group of researchers and specialists in Amazigh culture and digital linguistics, who unanimously recognized the anniversary as a pivotal moment in establishing Amazigh’s presence on the global technological stage.
Historical Context and Significance
The ISO’s adoption of the Tifinagh script on June 24, 2004, officially integrated the Amazigh language into the global information space by including it among internationally recognized technical standards. This milestone paved the way for its use in software and intelligent systems, marking a strategic advancement in the promotion of Amazigh as a national and official language.
