Refusal to Grant Permit for PJD Regional Conference in Fez Sparks “Political Storm” (Condemnatory Statement)

The regional secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in the Fez-Meknes region issued a condemnatory statement on Tuesday, denouncing the refusal to grant permission to use a conference hall affiliated with the Fez commune for organizing a regional conference. The party described this decision as “procrastination and stalling” and a violation of the law.

According to the statement, the party submitted a request to use the public facility well in advance and received a verbal promise of approval from the party delegate. However, the delegate later reneged on this promise, citing fears of “reprimand” from their party leader for allowing the PJD to use the hall, especially after learning that the conference would be overseen by PJD Secretary-General Abdelilah Benkirane. The statement suggested that the refusal might stem from concerns over Benkirane criticizing the failure of the head of government, who is affiliated with the delegate’s party.

The PJD labeled the delegate’s actions as “lacking in integrity,” emphasizing that their position demands a higher standard of ethical conduct. The statement criticized the mindset that “falls short of the standards expected of an elected official,” noting that the delegate “vacillated left and right” without demonstrating party loyalty. It stressed that the delegate’s constitutional role requires supporting the activities of political parties. The PJD affirmed its determination to expose such actions and confront any attempts to undermine serious political work.

This controversy comes at a time of heightened political competition in the Fez-Meknes region, with major parties engaging in debates over transparency and adherence to the law.
