Details of Morocco’s Regional Express Rail Network (RER) Project: Frequencies, Stations, and Served Cities

Morocco is advancing an ambitious strategy to modernize its transportation system through the launch of the Regional Express Rail Network (RER), covering three major regions: Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, and Marrakech-Safi. The project aims to alleviate congestion on existing rail networks and significantly improve urban and intercity mobility, especially ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

Lines and Stations

According to media reports, the network will include six main lines, three focusing on the metropolitan areas of Casablanca and Rabat, while other lines will complement the Atlantic corridor. The trains will operate at high frequencies, sometimes as often as every 7 minutes and 30 seconds, to meet growing demand.

In the Casablanca-Settat region, the network will serve several key urban centers such as Mohammedia, Zenata, Ain Sebaâ, Bernoussi, Nouaceur, and Mohammed V Airport, with a dedicated link to the new stadium in Benslimane. The network is expected to include 18 stations across three lines, with an estimated budget of approximately 1.1 billion Moroccan dirhams.

The Rabat-Salé-Kénitra RER, launched in 2023, consists of a single 66-kilometer line connecting Kenitra to Skhirat via Salé, Rabat, Temara, and Ain Atiq, featuring 12 stops and a daily service frequency of 15 minutes, utilizing existing railway infrastructure.

Recently added to the RER initiatives, the Marrakech-Safi region will see the construction of a new station in Sidi Ghanem near the industrial zone, with a dedicated connection to the upcoming Grand Stadium of Casablanca.

Integration with Other Projects

The RER project is part of a broader transport modernization plan that also includes the expansion of the high-speed rail line (LGV) linking Kenitra to Marrakech, officially launched in April 2025. The goal is to provide a multimodal network facilitating seamless connections between buses, trams, busways, and high-speed trains, thereby boosting economic development and creating new regional wealth opportunities.

Objectives and Outlook

The Regional Express Rail Network is expected to enhance mobility quality, reduce congestion, and support national preparations for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The project reflects Morocco’s commitment to developing a modern, sustainable transport infrastructure that meets the needs of its population and supports sustainable economic growth.

This project represents a pivotal step in Morocco’s transport strategy, anticipated to serve thousands of passengers daily and set a modern standard for urban and regional mobility in North Africa.
