Outrage in Tetouan Over Sudden Tuition Fee Increases in Private Schools Amid Lack of Transparency and Oversight

Several parents in the city of Tetouan were surprised by significant new hikes in registration and tuition fees at some private educational institutions. Less than two years after the last increase imposed on parents, they now face additional fee hikes presented as a fait accompli, without any prior notice or consultation.

Some administrators of these private schools justify the increases, which ranged between 200 and 300 Moroccan dirhams, by claiming that the additional funds will be allocated to raising the salaries of teachers who are currently paid low wages, despite the substantial revenues these institutions generate.

Commenting on this claim, one parent said, “I am certain that these increases will not go to the teachers’ pockets; even if some does, the majority will end up in the owners’ hands.” He added that if the administration respected its clients, it would have held a meeting to discuss the matter, noting that no one would object to a modest increase if it genuinely benefited the teachers.

In a related comment, another parent described the fee hikes as arbitrary and an abuse of power, pointing out that the institution knows how difficult it is for parents to transfer their children to another school. This situation allows the schools to impose whatever fees they want amid a lack of strict oversight from the relevant authorities, such as the Education Directorate and the Regional Academy, both of which appear powerless against the “chaos” prevailing in some private educational institutions.

This situation comes amid growing demands from parents for educational authorities to intervene to regulate private school fees and ensure transparency and fairness in dealings with families, especially given the difficult economic conditions many citizens are facing.
