Fez, Morocco – The Fez Grand Stadium, one of the kingdom’s most prominent sports landmarks, has regained its shine following the completion of the first phase of comprehensive rehabilitation and renovation works. The stadium is now reopening its doors to Moroccan fans and international matches as part of Morocco’s preparations to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Upcoming Official Matches
The stadium’s first official events in its new look will be the Moroccan national team’s friendly matches against Tunisia on June 6, 2025, and Benin on June 9, 2025. These matches mark the beginning of the stadium’s role as a world-class venue ready to host major football tournaments.
Key Features of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation
- Enhanced Seating Capacity: Originally inaugurated in 2007 with a capacity of 45,000 spectators, the stadium now accommodates 35,468 spectators after the first phase of renovation. Plans are underway to expand this capacity to 55,000 seats in preparation for the 2030 World Cup.
- International-Standard Natural Grass Pitch: The entire playing surface has been renewed with high-quality natural grass, ensuring optimal conditions for football matches.
- Advanced Infrastructure: The renovation included a full upgrade of the players’ and referees’ locker rooms, the replacement of seating across all stands, and the modernization of lighting and sound systems to meet global broadcasting standards.
- Modern Facade and Facilities: A significant portion of the new glass facade has been completed, giving the stadium a contemporary architectural and aesthetic appeal. Reception areas, VIP zones, hospitality services, and media spaces have also been enhanced.
- Improved Safety and Security: Special attention was given to strengthening surveillance and safety systems, as well as upgrading entrances and exits to guarantee a safe and comfortable experience for all spectators.
Future Projects for the 2030 World Cup
As part of the vision for the 2030 World Cup, plans include removing the athletics track to bring the stands closer to the pitch, thereby improving the viewing experience. Additionally, there are future plans to install a full roof covering the stadium.
With an estimated budget of around 600 million Moroccan dirhams, the Fez Grand Stadium confirms its readiness to host some of the most important football events, reinforcing the city of Fez’s status as a vibrant sports and cultural hub on Morocco’s sporting map, gearing up for the 2030 World Cup.
