As part of its ongoing humanitarian and social efforts to improve access to healthcare in remote areas, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity has launched a medical campaign focused on cataract surgery (locally known as “Jallala”). The initiative is taking place on May 30 and 31 at the Ifrane Provincial Hospital, benefiting 150 underprivileged patients from the region.
According to an official statement from the Foundation, the selected beneficiaries were identified during preliminary screening sessions carried out in the Foundation’s mobile medical unit in Sidi M’Khfi and at the Ifrane Provincial Hospital. These patients come from 12 rural communes across the municipalities of Ifrane and Azrou, including Timmhdit, Dayet Aoua, Tizguite, Bekrit, Sidi M’Khfi, Ain Leuh, among others.
A thorough selection and diagnostic process took place on May 7 and 8 across four locations—Ifrane, Sidi M’Khfi, Timmhdit, and Azrou—involving over 911 medical consultations by general practitioners, ophthalmologists, and lab technicians. This screening helped identify cases requiring surgical intervention and ensured that patients received comprehensive pre-operative assessments.
Surgical procedures are being conducted in two fully equipped operating rooms specially set up for this campaign within the provincial hospital. The operations are being carried out by a team of over 50 medical professionals, including volunteer ophthalmic surgeons, nurses, social workers, and technical support staff.
The campaign is the result of close coordination among local stakeholders, including regional and provincial health authorities, the Ifrane Provincial Hospital, the CHU Hassan II in Fez, and the Friends of the Visually Impaired Association in Fez.
This initiative follows four previous multi-specialty campaigns organized by the Foundation between January and April 2025 in the provinces of Zagora, Tan-Tan, Berkane, and Taounate, which benefited over 11,000 individuals. These campaigns included 334 surgeries in areas such as general surgery, pediatric surgery, and cataract operations, in addition to providing over 23,000 specialized medical services.
The Ifrane campaign reaffirms the Foundation’s commitment to bringing quality healthcare closer to underserved communities and improving the living conditions of Morocco’s rural population.
