The highly anticipated general assembly of the Fès-Meknès Regional Football League, held on Friday, May 30, 2025, concluded with the election of Mr. Abdessalam Bouaaz as the new president of the league. The result followed a tumultuous voting day marked by tension and the surprise withdrawal of rival candidate Mr. Imad Marrakchi, who cited what he called an “unworthy and unhealthy atmosphere.”
Bouaaz Wins by Majority as Marrakchi Withdraws
According to preliminary reports, Mr. Bouaaz secured 99 out of 169 votes cast by participating delegates, giving him a clear majority to lead the league for the upcoming term.
Just before the final vote count was made official, Mr. Marrakchi unexpectedly announced his withdrawal from the race. In a video statement, he explained the reasons behind his decision:
“I withdrew because the environment was unworthy of Moroccan football at both the national and regional levels. There were tensions and even hostility—I was denied access to the stage.”
He continued:
“In such conditions, you cannot implement meaningful projects. To work, you need a comfortable and cooperative environment. I chose to step back because I am deeply dissatisfied with what I witnessed.”
Marrakchi concluded by wishing the newly elected president success, encouraging him to tackle the existing challenges, and describing the election experience as “very difficult.”
A Heated Election After Administrative Challenges
The vote took place under special circumstances, following a period of administrative issues and a previous postponement of the general assembly. Reports from the event indicate that protests and tensions were observed throughout the proceedings, underscoring the intensity of the contest and the pressure surrounding the electoral process.
Expectations from the New Leadership
With Mr. Abdessalam Bouaaz now at the helm, expectations are high for a new chapter of unity and reform. His leadership team is expected to focus on resolving past disputes and strengthening football across the region, responding to the aspirations of clubs and fans in Fès, Meknès, and surrounding provinces.
More updates to follow as Mr. Bouaaz begins his mandate.
