Ifrane Hosts a Crucial Awareness Day to Combat Forest Fires and Protect Environmental Heritage

On Wednesday, May 21, the provinces of Ifrane and Azrou hosted a vital awareness day aimed at educating students from Ben Sâamim and Al Wahda high schools on the dangers of forest fires and their devastating impact on biodiversity and forest heritage. The initiative was spearheaded by the UNESCO Atlas Morocco Club and the Friends of the Ifrane Valley Association.

This event coincided with the National Day for Raising Awareness of Forest Fire Risks, observed annually on May 21, and aimed to instill a culture of environmental prevention among youth while promoting collective awareness about the need to preserve forest cover.

Abdelaali Adnan, founding president of the UNESCO Atlas Morocco Club, stressed that education and awareness remain the most effective tools to combat forest fires. He emphasized the importance of engaging students as key drivers in spreading preventive behavior within their communities.

For his part, Mohamed Harmat Allah, principal of Ben Sâamim High School, noted that the event was organized in partnership with several stakeholders, including the provincial education directorate, the National Agency for Water and Forests, civil protection services, and civil society organizations, all working to instill a sense of environmental responsibility among students.

In the same context, Fatima Zahra Lgharghlimi, coordinator of development and partnerships at the National Water and Forests Agency in Azrou, highlighted that the success of the day was due to the active participation of students and the presence of various key actors, including local authorities, media, and civil society.

Saad Faqri, a member of the mobile forest protection unit in Azrou, emphasized the importance of raising awareness among visitors and tourists during the summer season. He confirmed that coordination with field partners is ongoing to intensify awareness campaigns in forest areas across the province.

Hassan Abdelhadi, a member of the Meknes Hiking Association, praised the initiative, underscoring the importance of strengthening public awareness around protecting fragile ecosystems, especially the cedar forests of Ifrane and Azrou, which require special care and respect to ensure their sustainability.

This awareness initiative is part of a broader series of environmental activities designed to foster environmental consciousness among students and encourage them to adopt responsible practices toward forest conservation.
