Residents of Al-Fadila Neighborhood in Fez Protest Installation of Telecom Antenna Near School and Park: “It’s Harmful and Noisy!” (Video)

Residents of the Al-Fadila neighborhood in Fez have expressed strong opposition to the installation of a telecom antenna (or “Rizo” network tower) near a local school and inside a community park, sparking widespread anger and concern among locals. Residents believe that this project poses a threat to their health and to the well-being of children in the area.

The primary objection raised by the residents is the location of the antenna, which is planned to be installed near a school frequented by numerous children, as well as close to residential homes and a park that serves as a much-needed green space for families. Locals argue that this setup could negatively affect their peace and privacy. They further stated that the noise emitted by the tower would be a major disturbance, especially in a densely populated residential area.

Several residents voiced fears about potential health risks, citing noise pollution and vibrations from the tower that could increase stress levels in the neighborhood. They also expressed concerns about electromagnetic waves potentially harming the health of children and young people who are regularly present in the vicinity.

The principal of a private school in the area publicly opposed the project, warning that it could pose a direct threat to the health of students and the youth. She emphasized that, in the absence of clear solutions for issues related to electromagnetic radiation and noise, the installation of such a device would only worsen the health and environmental conditions in the neighborhood.

In light of these concerns, residents have called on local authorities, including the regional governor, the district officer (bashā), and the local commander (qā’id), to urgently intervene and prevent harm to the community. They also urged the municipal council to reconsider the project and seek alternative locations that would not impact public spaces or the residents’ quality of life. The park, they stressed, should remain a space free from infrastructure that could detract from its beauty or the comfort it provides to the community.

As these protests grow louder, the pressing question remains: Will the authorities prioritize residents’ health and environmental rights by halting or relocating the project, or will it move forward despite the broad opposition?
